Petite is defined by most brands as 5'4" or 5'3" and under, which means petites who are 5'1" or shorter are several inches shorter than the woman these jeans are designed for. Even taller petites with longer torsos and shorter legs can struggle with the standard petite inseams, usually 27"-29".

This blog rounds up the best straight jeans for a super short inseam (26" or less). Straight jeans are a great pick for shorter inseams for a few reasons:

• The cut of straight leg jeans makes it easier to get away with wearing cropped or ankle jeans as full length, since there isn't an obvious knee placement that would look misplaced.
• Straight jeans are pretty widely accepted across the board and aren't controversial the way barrel jeans are. For millennials, they're a stepping stone to going a little wider. And I know petites are often worried about "drowning" in larger jeans, so straight jeans feel a little safer.
• Straight jeans are very versatile. They can be dressed up with heels and a blazer for the office or down with sneakers and a tee for weekend errands. And they play well with most shoes in your closet.

In other words, a solid pair of straight jeans in your closet is a win.

Under 25"

Jeans under 25" are almost exclusively expected to be cropped or ankle. Abercrombie & Fitch is a great place to shop for short inseams given their extra short option. Kut from the Kloth and Gap also have a couple good selections. Kut from the Kloth's Amy Jean has a smaller leg opening at 12.5" which puts in more in the slim-straight category if you want to stay a little closer to skinnies.

Between 25" and 26"

Mother's "Lil" line is built specifically with shorter inseams in mind, and four of their straight styles land here, all at 25.5" with leg openings ranging from 13" to 17.5". That gives you a slim-straight option (Dazzler) or a more relaxed-straight option (Rambler) depending on your preference, which is unusual for a premium brand. Worth noting that Mother and Paige is a splurge ($200+). A&F, KTK, and Ruti also have a few options here.

26"

This is the biggest bucket, which makes sense; 26" is the closest thing to a "standard" cropped inseam across brands. Levi's has five different versions of their 501 cropped jean. If you want the iconic 501 fit without paying for hemming, this is the cleanest path. Quince is the budget standout at $50 a pair, with five different straight styles in a 26" inseam from slim straight to a relaxed boyfriend cut.

Curvy fit

While most petites don't need curvy-specific sizing (petite is defined by torso and leg length, not hip-to-waist ratio), some petites do have a curvy fit and love having an intentional design for that. A few honest caveats

Inseam numbers are the brand-published numbers. Always check the specific size and wash, inseam can vary by a half-inch within the same style.

"Cropped" or "ankle" is relative to the brand's typical customer but these can sometimes work as full-length as well.

Petite-specific sizing usually fits better than a regular jean hemmed down because the rise and knee placement are scaled too. Mother's Lil line, Paige Petites, Kut's petite line, and Abercrombie's petite sizing are true petite cuts. Levi's 501 cropped and Quince Bella are regular sizing in shorter inseams. Both can work, just know which you're getting.

Remember: There’s no substitute for trying on jeans. Jeans can seem to have the perfect measurements, but the published vs actual measured measurements may be different, or the other minor measurements that aren't published (like back rise, thigh size, etc.) could affect how it fits.
